UK Vario South (Warton) Scale Day 17th & 18th July 2010

Postby Darrens » Tue Dec 15, 2009 9:41 am

Following the success of the event last year the Midland Helicopter Club are pleased to host the event again which will be run over 2 days on the 17th & 18th July at our club field in Warton, Warwickshire. All usual facilities will be available to include camping (by prior arrangement), catering and toilets and there will be a generous raffle on the Sunday. All pilots must have the customary BMFA insurance if they wish to fly.
Further details and directions will be posted on our website in due course at http://www.midlandhelicopterclub.org.uk and we very much look forward to welcoming all visitors if you are able to join us.

We will also be running a scale competition on a seperate date, so please keep an eye on our website for the details of that when they are announced.

Some details on the scale comp have been posted here viewtopic.php?f=21&t=11122

Yes, just set it at 15th August. There will 2 catagories you can enter, Scale and Super Scale.

Scale will be for machines without documentation, typically complete kits or Funky fuselages for example.

Super Scale will be for machines judged against documentation.

There will be both static and flying sections and the exact format and rules will be published shortly. I can confirm the rules will be very relaxed, especially for the scale section. We will not be replacating the rules which apply to the Nationals for example.

May I suggest that you do use the Nats rules. The mandatory maneuvers are simple enough, then you get to fly around and strut your stuff and it gives you a feel what what you will be doing if you do enter the Nats, which after all is the ultimate aim. Get more folks in.

As for the semi scale contest, use the same flying rules but dont have a static contest.

Hi Peter,

the UK Nats had only 6 entrants and IMHO, people were put off by the rules and post event discussion. I am not knocking the Nats, but we purposely want to avoid that format and make this event a little less serious, more simplified and more relaxed. That way we feel we can still offer people the chance of proper competition, but can hope that far more people will get engaged in competing with scale machines and enjoy it........that can only help promote our hobby.
My concern is that "something" prevented people from entering the Nats and 6 entries devalues the competition a little, as the winner will know they have not competed against ALL of the top machines, just a very small sample.
Of course, we may get no more than the Nats did, but I feel compelled to try something new in an attempt to get a well attended and supported UK scale competition under way.

Cheers
Darren

I think most people were put off simply because it was the nats. If you are competing against Len Mount, you are wasting your time if you expect to win so why bother going. If its a more local contest using a new set of rules kinda defeats the objective of having a BMFA approved set of rules which Dennis has spent so much time getting accepted.

I always thought a bit of hovering, a climbout and a landing was too simple for the Nats but having seen how difficult it is to do it perfectly, I realise it is perfect for all levels of competition.

However, its your contest, do it your way, as long as you are having fun its good.

I've been trying to get to this for the past two years. Will definitely make the effort this time. Unfortunately will not make the scale comp though as we'll be the other side of the world at that time.

Don't feel like that, the comp is relaxed and designed to promote scale and be an entry into competition, so you won't feel out of sorts. Check out the format when you download the entry form and you'll see what I mean. Look forward to seeing you at both events buddy

I have read the format just need to practice a lot now lol, just have to figure out a scale routine for the lynx with 5 manouvers. Take off, landing well there's two hehe.
How much is the enrty as i can't seem to see a price?
Catch you all very soon

Hi Hawkeye,

The entry is £15, but also covers you for the fly-in both days. Submitting your app on the Vario weekend would be fine Buddy
